in my blood

People often ask: what is your interest / motivation / dedication in researching and storytelling war?

It’s my own family who started it.

This is my dad. He is a Vietnam veteran. He wasn’t wounded over there - physically - and he doesn’t carry scars you can see with your eyes.

His father fought on Attu and Kwajalein.

My other grandfather served in Europe, then again in Korea.

My step great grandfather served on Iwo Jima.

Multiple uncles served in the same wars.

Multiple great grandfathers served on both sides of the Civil War.

And on and on and on. And on.

The scars of war are burrowed deep into my blood. My experience has been that the only way to honor, and therefore heal, the scars of war are to tell their stories.

And so, I do.

PS War isn’t just about scars. It’s about fortitude, courage, sacrifice, altruism, and incredible selflessness.
