If you are like me you will move wildly between mediums - sometimes using a wide variety, and sometimes just narrowing it down and keeping it simple. All of my demos will be just that - demos. You will take them and run in your own directions with them, so there are not really very many ‘right’ supplies. You will be able to explore the demos with anything you have in your studio.

There are two lists below. The first is a very basic starter list, the most simple list to get you going. This list will provide an overview of options for you. The second is everything that I like to have on hand.

This is not a list that you need to have in order to create in Metamorph. You can create with anything you already have. And … if you’ve ever taken a course with me, you probably already have everything you’ll need :)

And, as a general rule: any brand or color that you feel drawn to is fine.

  • Mixed Media Art Journal - You can use any size you desire, and if you are already working in a journal, there is no need for a brand new one. The journal linked here is my current preference. The paper is thick and takes wet media well.

  • Xeroxes / Laser Prints - If you’ve taken my workshops before you know how much I love my xeroxes! I rely heavily on these in my work. You will want to begin with at least 10 color laser prints or photocopies of members of your ancestral line as well as any type of other inspiring and emotionally evocative imagery that stirs and inspires you. They need to be printed on a color laser machine like those at FedEx or at other copy shops. Inkjet prints will be okay but the quality and clarity just aren’t as good - and the typical 32 lb weight of laser paper works really well in journaling. You will also likely want to run back to the copy shop and make more after a week or so into our sessions.

  • Adhesive - Any adhesive you like! Matte acrylic medium is great, I love Elmers Glue Sticks because you can usually peel the paper right off if you change your mind later. Mod Podge is another fave - and you can even use masking tape or Glue Tape Runners.

  • Pencils - I just always love to have mechanical pencils on hand, and 0.5 is my favorite size of lead. I also love to have water soluble pencils on hand.

  • Pens - You’ll want to have one or two black pens on hand.

  • Gesso - Liquitex is an awesome brand, it is high quality and gets the job done.

  • Paint Brushes - Paint brushes are, of course, great for using paint. You will also need a brush holder with water - there are some fun handmade jars from Etsy or you can just use Mason or recycled food jars.

  • Paint - Use any paint and any colors that you enjoy. Watercolor, gouache, oil or acrylics - make sure you chose what you want and colors that make you feel happy and inspired.

  • Heat gun - A heat gun is great for a quick dry of wet pages. If you don’t have a heat gun, a hair dryer works.

  • Ephemera - Interesting paper: extra ephemera you have laying around, anything and everything, the more the merrier with ephemera. Scrapbook paper can be fun too!

  • Cutting tools - I always have Xacto Knives on hand, and a pair of scissors will do the job, too.

  • Graphite Paper - Any color will do. Saral is a preferred brand but there are many to choose from, and you can’t go wrong.

  • Needles + Thread - Any colors of sewing thread that you want and a variety of needle sizes will be sufficient.

    Extended Materials:

This is a list of my favorite materials, some of which you will see me using in the videos. I usually create with a huge variety of materials around me, and never really know what I am going to use. This list will grow …

  • Caran d’Ache Supracolors - Water soluble colored pencils, they are so fun to toy around with! They leave me with a smile on my face, be sure to choose your color based on what

    you feel.

  • Alcohol Ink Supplies - Alcohol pens are great! The brand Ohuhu is a great cheap alternative to Copic. Alcohol inks are fun too, I love the brand Tim Holtz.

  • Fabric Scraps - I usually stick with light colored muslin or linen, but if you are feeling wild go ahead and have a variety on hand to play with.

  • Newsprint - Size 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 is what I use.

  • Tape - Washi tape and masking tape are always good to have around.

  • Old Photos - Thrift store or personal photos, if you don’t want to use the originals be sure to xerox them.

  • Pens - I love pens! So do you! We all love pens :) Fine liner pens are fun, so are gel pens! Pentel brush pens are absolutely divine, so are the Kuretake brush pens.

  • Journal - A journal is highly recommended to write down your thoughts and feelings as you work through your art journal.

  • Hole Puncher (single)
