Houston Art Workshops

Join us in Erin Faith Allen's inviting and spacious studio deep in the heart of ... the arts district in downtown Houston, Texas.  The people who gather in Erin's creative space are spectaularly warm, welcoming, full of zest, and mirror Erin's greatest mission: to create a container of safety, kindness, freedom, and encouragement.  With us, you get to bring all that you *truly* are and watch magic unfold from your own fingertips. All types and levels of artists are welcome: from the curious beginner to the seasoned artisan.

The studio sits on the second floor of a 100 year old furniture factory, smack in the middle of Houston.  The building is a sweet little slice of history laying at the feet of the city's tallest skyscrapers.  When you are in the studio, you are surrounded by literally hundreds of other artists, and the creative vibe is truly electric.

The surrounding area of Houston has it all: hipster bars and cafes, traditional southern sweetness, and all with a dollap of grit.  The air is soothing and rich, the people couldn't be friendlier, and the sunsets are whopping.

Workshop days run from 930-430, with an hour break for lunch.  There are restaurants within a few miles of the studio - or you can enjoy your packed lunch while continuing in your creative bubble at your workspace.

A materials list will be emailed to you, with directions to the studio, after your registration and a little closer to the date.

Roxanne Evans Stout ::: Between the Sun and the Moon ::: Jan 12-14, 2018

Join Roxanne for this magical workshop where we will joyfully make a handcrafted book that is dedicated to your own days 'between the Sun and the Moon'.

On your artist book pages you will create collaged mandalas representing what is sacred in your life, landscapes from your soul, and paper tapestries inspired by the seasons.

Together we will explore the symbolism and legends of the sun and the moon, the callings of the north and the south, and the offerings of day and night and where they can fit in our art.

And as each of your days unfold, 'between the sun and the moon' you will be inspired, nurtured and enriched ... and discover the essence of your own creativity.

Erin Faith Allen ::: Ancestors ::: Jan 20-21, 2018

The people who came before us made choices, faced consequences, and experienced a full range of triumphs and tragedies.

All of these things make us who we are. Whether we like it or not, we carry the sometimes delicate, sometimes destructive - but always informative - imprints of our ancestors.

When we spend time cultivating awareness and understanding of what we are literally made of, our entire world shifts in indescribable ways.  In this workshop I will share a few tricks for bringing your ancestors into your creative process, whether they are your direct bloodline or of a general ethnic or geographic origin.

We will work in an art journal, and do exploratory mixed media collaging processes that will inch you closer to integrating and appreciating the multi-faceted stories you choose to work with.  Enchantment, forgiveness, healing, connection, enlightenment, embodiment, and a-ha moments are a few of the experiences you may have when you consciously work with the stories of the people who came before.

I will share mixed media techniques, and guide you throughout your process.  This workshop will be conceptually based.  I do not guide workshops on technique alone, nor do I teach you to make art that looks like mine.  I guide workshops with an open heart and high intention to hold a space for you to find your unique, authentic expression.

Erin Faith Allen ::: Inner Space ::: February 3-4 and again on November 3-4, 2018

Inner Space with Erin Faith Allen is running twice in 2018, February 3-4 and again on November 3-4, 2018.

In this art journaling workshop, we will cultivate and invite inner freedom and a sense of expansiveness, and will loosen our internal pressures about perfection as we go along.

Our bodies are the vehicle for our emotions, experiences, expressions, and ... embodiment.  Within our bodies lie a vast and spacious realm of unique and concrete knowingness, instinct, creative impulse, and full throttle will power.  We will tap into this realm that lives in us, by playing with abstract expressionism, and intersect our inner space with practical application of mixed media collage.  And, we will explore the power of innate instinct, and how it can totally up our creative game.  Ultimately, we will give ourselves the ultimate luxury of the finest art of all: self-connection.

You will leave this workshop having a heightened sense of your personal aesthetic in creative expression, a deepened experience with your own self-connection, and the opportunity to create a journal spread or two or three that expresses the powerful beauty of your inner space.

Erin Faith Allen ::: Drawn In ::: March 3-4 and again September 1-2, 2018

Drawn In with Erin Faith Allen is running twice in 2018, March 3-4 and again on September 1-2, 2018.

In this workshop we will build upon, and turn inside out, the basic technique of drawing.  Within the passionate terrain of our art journals we will build up backgrounds using a variety of mixed media techniques, and lay down our drawings with the extreme freedom required to illustrate our unique worlds with an injection of oomph.

Focusing on expressionism and leaving perfectionism at the door, we will embrace our individually organic way of laying down lines and shapes.  Never again approaching the world of drawing the same way, we will forever fill up our surfaces with dynamic, charged, emboldened, and cracklingly alive creative outpourings.

Liz Lamoreux ::: Water Your Soul ::: April 6-8, 2018

Come along for three days of creative play, connection, mindfulness, and listening to what you most need with Liz Lamoreux.

Watering your soul is about creating space for you and your soul care practice in the midst of whatever life hands you. It's seeking the space in the in-between moments and nourishing yourself. It's saying YES to filling up your internal well, so you can be more present in your life and with your loved ones.

It isn't always easy, which is why we practice it again and again. It isn't always pretty, which is why we circle to tell the true stories to be reminded that we aren’t alone.

But it is a choice. Each day. It's a choice to say: I am ready to deeply connect with me, to be with myself in the quiet, to listen to what I need. And this workshop is going to help you make that choice a little more each day through creativity and mindfulness practices.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

A peek inside our Water Your Soul adventure:

  • We’ll share stories, connect with one another, and spend time deeply listening.
  • We'll spend time learning and experiencing creative self-care and mindfulness practices.
  • We’ll talk about The And Space and how we can navigate it. The And Space is what I call the place where we live as we hold beauty in one hand and the messiness of life in the other, where we hold joy and grief, where we hold the daily routine and our longings.
  • We’ll write a few stories and maybe even a few poems, find our personal mantras, and possibly even have a dance party (or two).
  • We'll fill up a journal with ideas, images, inspiration, and stories that will become a beacon of light for us as we take our next steps. This journal will become another practice you can turn to as a way to support yourself and get messy and creative.
  • We'll slow down and spend time in mindful, sacred space, create a community altar, and look at ways we can create space for sacred ritual in our daily lives.

You’ll leave this workshop with a journal you can continue to play in and the beginnings of your own self-care and mindfulness practices to do at home along with connection with kindred spirits who will hopefully become new friends.

Erin Faith Allen ::: Self As Muse ::: July 7-8 and again on December 1-2, 2018

Self As Muse with Erin Faith Allen is running twice in 2018, July 7-8 and again on December 1-2, 2018.

In this art journaling workshop we look to our self as our most evocative and intriguing muse, and walk through a few enlightening mixed media self-portrait techniques.   The creative and conceptual processes we will explore together will guide us ever deeper into the beautiful and game-changing truth of who we are.

We will focus on expressionism rather than perfectionism.  We will endeavor to freely perceive, articulate, and embrace our quirks and the individualities that are our superpowers.  We will extend our compassions and mercies to the parts of us we have discarded or forgotten, and open a space to retrieve the wholeness of our true self.

Wendy Brightbill ::: Art and Alchemy ::: Sept 15-16, 2018

In this two day workshop with prolific artist and creator Wendy Brightbill, we will delve into the process of abstract painting through fluid art and intentional mark making.

Students will learn how to listen deeply to their inner creative impulses and develop a process that becomes consistently organic and uniquely intentional. We will be stretching past the familiar, make new connections to our work, and expand our creative practice as an adventure into abstract expressionism.

Wendy believes that color, line, and texture all tell a story ... and she wants to give you a beauty-packed 2 days by guiding YOU as you harness your own unique story through the power of your own impulse and how it longs to express.

Wendy's beautiful abstracts, florals, and landscapes hang in homes around the world.

For millennia, people have sought the wisdom of the multi-named universal benevolence through oracles, prophets, relics, signs, and cards.

In this workshop, I will guide you through the exciting process of creating a set of oracle cards filled with your own powerful lexicon of personal symbology, myth, and magic.  We will spend time conjuring your own unique interpretations, and exploring meaning and perception.

You will be surprised at the inspiration you feel as you curate your own deck through a transformative surrender to your highly individual creative expressions that shine forth your personal aesthetic and talis(wo)men.

Jenny Doh ::: Painting By Heart ::: October 20-21, 2018

How do you feel when you look at the canvas and consider the process of painting? Is it possible for you to conceive of a way for that feeling to change and evolve? If so, how might you go about getting your feelings about the painting process to evolve … anywhere from slightly to radically different?

Just like I would never hand over a sewing machine to someone who has never sewn and say “follow your intuition and just sew,” I also think that guidance with paints and related materials is needed to get a person to feel comfortable with the painting process, before we engage our intuitions.

TECHNIQUES INCLUDED:

  • Overview of tools and materials with principles of best practices in terms of handling paints and caring for tools
  • Warm-up exercises to get our mindsets into new ways of thinking and seeing and feeling
  • Demonstration and teaching of how to build layers of paint on a blank canvas using 15+ methods
  • Discussion of concepts drawn from literature that have applicaions on how to overcome creative barriers during the creative process
  • Discussion of lifelong journey involving how to make the art we make our own by reaching deep into who we are and allowing who we are to be expressed on our canvases
  • Principles of solving problems and deciding when a work is finished or finished for the time being
  • How to look at and discover concepts that the canvas communicates and how to coax such concepts out into distinctive imagery
  • How to apply representational concepts onto the canvas by working with references and quiet the background, and when appropriate, to add shadows for still life-inspired images

Jenny Doh ::: Oil Painting Bootcamp ::: Jan 12-13, 2019

In this workshop, I will teach the basic fundamentals for preparing and executing alla prima (wet-on-wet, single-session work) still life oil paintings using actual objects from life and/or photos references of subjects.

DAY ONE
On the first day, we will discuss palette organization, paintbrush organization, substrate preparation, life composition, and value recognition, and artistic discipline. We will also look at paintings from some of my favorite oil painters and discuss their works in terms of composition, value and color. I will do a painting demonstration on gessobord to help participants complete a small non-complex still life oil painting.

DAY TWO
On the second day, we will embark on a slightly larger work on paper with a slightly more complex composition/reference, using the fundamentals that were discussed on day one. Each participant will approach her/his work area in a manner where they are putting to practice all that was discussed on the first day.

For your convenience, I will provide all oil paints, medium, palette paper, and substrates for all participants. This will help you use and understand my favorite tools and materials before you make the investment into buying everything.  A small list of requirements will be sent after registration, and closer to the date of the workshop.
